Fur

"The Friars" -
Available from the Artist
Full sheet 570mm x 760mm on Arches 300gsm rough. “The beautiful Tasmanian fur seals were hunted almost to extinction to grace the backs of the wealthy. Now a protected species they are relaxed and friendly around humans. Visiting their rockery off Bruny Island I was struck by their laissez faire attitude, just doing what comes naturally, reacting naturally, going with the flow. Brilliant swimmers, they are able to sinuously dance in the water, moving with the ebb and flow of the currents and waves. They have much to teach us of acceptance, family and leaning to just sit back and go with the flow."

"Heart of Kosciuszko" -
Available from the Artist
380mm x 570mm on Srches 300gsm. "Deep in the heart of Kosciusko roam the wild horses, the brumbies. Slaughtered inhumanely in their thousands, they struggle to find the last refuge. These heritage horses which gave so much in the service of our country deserve better. So with a wise stallion in the lead, his herd is led ever higher, ever further into unexplored territory to find safety and live their lives peacefully. As surely as these brave equines befriended us, fought by our sides, gave their heart and soul for us, so they exemplify the very Heart of Kosciusko. "

SOLD - "Band of Brothers"
610mm x 460mm
"Wild horses bless us with their presence all over the world. Forming bachelor bands, young stallions get together in their own herd, practicing and honing their skills until they are ready to challenge an alpha stallion for his mares. The bonds of friendship grow deep, finding solace and comfort in each other’s company, the brothers face adversity, sunshine, loss and love together. We would do well to learn from these gentle creatures, their capacity for compassion, their ferocity in protecting those they love, truly they are a band of brothers."

The Mountain Pygmy Possum is listed as critically endangered with only an approximate 2000 individuals left.
Their decline is attributed to ski resort development and the destruction of habitat, as well as climate change causing a change in their most important food source the Bogong Moth.
These little smaller than tea-cup sized marsupials live in the high alpine boulder fields in only three remaining locations in the Kosciusko National Park.
Nocturnal and shy, rarely seen, largely unknown by the public, yet their loss will have a huge impact for such a small life.

"Maftet" -
Available from The Longworth Gallery, Santa Fe
18” x 24” Watercolour on Arches 300gsm “Maftet - she who runs fast” to the ancient Egyptians these fastest of all land animals were honoured and revered, gracing the halls of the finest palaces and pampered, expressing grace, power, litheness and a reigned savagery. Maftet is the deification of legal justice and offered protection of the Pharoah’s chambers, she also offered protection against venomous animals. Bringing up as many as five cubs in her litter, as with human mothers she gives life, nourishment, protection and the lessons of life in a harsh and challenging environment using all her speed, stealth and cunning to beat nature’s odds.”

"Equal parts Ginger Ale, Ginger Beer, a dash of Bitters and possible a measure of lime cordial, the “Gunner” was invented by the colonial British as a refreshing non-alcoholic drink in the steamier months. Not so lucky were the Gunners, those members of Artillery regiments who caused the greatest amount of damage and casualties in WW1. The Australian Lighthorse were not the only regiments to use horses, the Australian artillery eventually incorporated the use of these incredibly stoic, hardy and reliable animals to manoeuvre the heavy guns into place. To this day, Artillery units throughout Australia honour the horse and it’s place in their history, their current day “mounts” are just as revered and loved, such as the self-propelled Howitzer. I once knew a chestnut named Gunner, he was a Waler with all the loyalty, charm and sturdiness, and a willingness to face anything, but a measure of that “ginger and bitters” in him, that made him just that little bit exciting. Gunner was extremely good at getting out of stables and halters…with a personality to match both his colour, and the big guns, like a lot of military men, he was a tough guy with a huge heart."

“The Laird was and is the local lord and land owner in Scotland. A title by inheritance or bestowed by royalty, he is responsible for all who inhabit and work on his land. Among those inhabitants are various species of elk or deer. The male, vying for the attentions of females, protecting them and his young, like his human counterpart is indeed Laird of all he surveys, his kingdom is the wild meadows and forests, his strength must be inviolable, as he earns the right to keep his kingdom intact and ensure the continuation of his genes, inherited by his young through the ages.”

Essential to life…. breath….the warm tickle of a horse’s breath as it barely brushes the skin, the warm smell of fresh hay as she breathes out….gentle air sparkles as it crystallises in the early morning, shining tiny rainbows drifting earthwards. The soft snort of appreciation for morning tidbits and that ever-present loyalty and devotion of a good friend. These are the little things that cling to our memories, that give us permission to relax and indulge in that warm fuzzy feeling, can lift us to new heights during our day.

"The purity of emotion felt by a parent for their young is singular, deep, soul-felt, almost a rapturous anguish, breathing in the scent of the new born, helping them take their first steps, enfolding them in our love when they hurt or are unsure or afraid. Not only do we love, we cherish, which is to nurture, be-love the other, offer patience and watch over them. With these heart-felt emotions and wealth of feeling, our young grow strong, stable, adventurous, but deeply respectful of all our hearts and minds can provide. Together that special bond of parent and child becomes unassailable through all life’s tribulations and joys."

SOLD - "Softly"
Available The Longworth Gallery, Santa Fe
460mm x 610mm "Softly….he appears…breath whispers like the gentle lapping of wavelets on silky sand. Hush, hold your breath so as not to spook the incredible. He knows you’re there, he senses you, feels your breathing even as you hold it. Snorting he bows his head acknowledging your presence, not fearful, confident in his ability to flee or stand. Gliding closer he feels your thoughts, of wonder and love for his soft magnificence, a tear falls at his beauty. Softly…the fog closes in…he is gone…but for a memory."

SOLD - Alone and unassisted
Andrew Barton “Banjo” Paterson wrote The Man from Snowy River at a time when Australia was finding it’s feet as a nation, a time when bravery, mate ship, adaptability and risk taking were identified as quintessentially Australian. It tells the story of the Colt from Old Regret who was worth a thousand pounds in the 1880’s, (now about 118,000 UKPDS) was coerced by the wild bush horses we know as Brumbies, and ran off with them. All the riders gathered to chase the horses down and re-unite the Colt with his owner, but none except Clancy thought the ‘boy’ and his ‘weedy beast’ strong enough. Well he proved them wrong. This work “Alone and Unassisted” is based on this fabulous poem, but it also represents the tenacity and spirit of Australians to go after what is important to them, no matter the cost. We see the stallion, is he the wild stallion that lured the colt in the foreground? Or is he the colt grown, with a memory of the youngster he was, or is the young colt the progeny of the famous original. Splashing through the waters of life, they seek freedom, freedom from the constraints of man, to live as they wish in the high country. Our Australian horses have given us too much, so many lost in time of war and not brought home, and these heritage horses are now endangered by man, who forgets the debt owed to them. Perhaps, had the Man who brought him back alone and unassisted may indeed have bid the mob adieu had he known what was in store for them.

The Bull Elk or Wapiti bulges his welcome to the world, sending his presence and readiness for combat to the world, haunting calls through the woodland as the forest king, the ghost challenges those who would dare, to stay away from his harem, his family. As Reveille starts the day with the wake up call, so is the Elk waking us to competition, to question our goals, bringing us courage to strive, to go the distance to achieve our ultimate dreams through strength and awareness, entering a time of plenty."

"The dwindling ice flows and increasing distances to swim, the scarcity of food as the oceans warm and the polar ice caps melt, mean the already vulnerable polar bears find it harder to find a mate, harder to survive themselves, let alone bringing healthy young into a harsh and severely challenged world. .As with all mothers, she will fiercely defend her cubs, sacrifice her own body to provide nourishment, teach them about the world, how to hunt and survive….but most of all she is always in search of safety….to provide a safe haven for them to grow, learn and live."

Lord of all he surveys, perfectly attuned to the ocean as the land, he is a solitary creature, joining his kind to mate and continue his line, or for play and a cuddle. As with our explorers and adventurers, sometimes he will join others for a brief companionship perhaps?Preferring his own company, he follows his prey, fearless in his pursuit, commanding his space in “the ring of life” - he has much to teach us of determination and survival.

"Polar Night"
Full sheet deckle edge watercolour
Available from The Longworth Gallery, Santa Fe
57cm x 76cm = 22.5” x 30”
As the world edges closer and closer to a change in climate, more than we, the animals feel it, it affects them right now and none more so than the Polar Bear. These Bears need ice flows from which to hunt and fish. Great swimmers, nevertheless they are becoming stranded on flows and icebergs that break off and float away, sometimes forcing them to swim for miles. As the mile-deep permafrost melts, it creates magnificent waterfalls, exposing the millennia old rocks below. The Polar Bears must travel further and further for food, for mates, for a safe den to bring up their young. As their home changes, forever, instead of the 24 hour polar day of the summer, they will enter the polar night, darker days, a harder existence. We can only hope that, as with most of our species, they learn to adapt, and the sun will shine on them once again.

"Everyone is always competing..in the animal world it is competition for food and one has to admire, whilst finding seagulls sometimes irritating with their demanding screeches, their tenacity and sometimes what seems like ill-thought bravery in tackling things bigger than themselves. The Coastal Brown Bears or Grizzlies hunt for salmon when the run is on, not always successfully and in their world it is a fight for survival, laying down the fat for the winter hibernation. We humans also have a tenacity in the face of what can seem like insurmountable odds, rarely for survival, but it can feel that way. For some it is a matter of not sharing to survive…sometimes the small but rowdy win…more often it is a case of …get your own."

"As the ash falls around them signifying the end of their ordeal, exhausted yet safe, Soot cradles her joey. Something of a Cinderella, Sinders has survived the fires, the ravaging of their homeland and, in the arms of her mother, embraced by the tall Flooded Gums of their home, she too shall look to a better future. In four or five years she may have a joey of her own, and so the long climb back to a healthy population starts. For now, snuggled in the fork of a tall tree, sprouting new foliage, they gather their strength, these most dearly beloved Australians."

"Our busy pace of life drives us faster and faster, sometimes not even knowing where we are going, or how we are going to get there…working, shopping for food, we accelerate towards the end of our day, or sometimes run away from that we find most beautiful. We rush through our lives without catching hold of those things that give us joy; those precious moments become more rare, but all the more special when we slow the chase, draw breath, and pause to survey this incredible place in which we live; notions of “survival” are different for us all…
